If Lorentz transformations are applied to a superluminal object, a contradictory situation inevitably arises. For example, the speed of a tachyon, in accordance with these transformations, becomes dependent on the speed of the IFR from which it is observed, leading in all cases to an inevitable "journey into the past." No movement into the past is possible, it is not a physical phenomenon.

Consider the motion of a tachyon in a certain moving IFR. To determine its speed, we apply the Lorentz rule for adding speeds. A feature of any predetermined tachyon speed in this case is that there is always an IFR in which this speed becomes unbounded from above, that is, infinitely large or instantaneous. Let's find the speed of such an IFR, in which the speed of the tachyon will be equal to infinity:

u is the speed of the initial ISO;

V is the speed of the tachyon in the rest frame of this IFR;

v is the speed of the desired ISO, in which V becomes infinitely large.

We use a measurement system in which the speed of light is one. It is easy to see from the equation that the paradox arises in the case of multidirectional motion of two systems, that is, the desired IRF moves at a speed v in a negative direction, therefore:

At the same time, the speed of the tachyon u in the initial frame of reference can be any, as long as it is greater than the speed of light, even if by a small amount. For example:

The diagram shows two IFRs - emitting and receiving tachyon, a particle moving faster than the speed of light. The speed of the radiating IFR depends on the relative speed of some laboratory, conditionally immobile system. We can choose a laboratory system in which the speed of the tachyon can be equal to infinity. At some other speeds of the laboratory system, the tachyon shows a movement into the past. The speed of the tachyon in the investigated, initial frame of reference on the diagram is taken as insignificant - about 1.5 speeds of light. All events are considered at the time points of different laboratory reference systems when the tachyon crosses them. This is approximately 80 to 90 units of time. Let's pay attention to the fact that the ends of the tachyon "slide" along the hyperbole - the isochrone. An isochrone is a line that cuts off equal moments of time from the beginning of movement at all ISOs. Therefore, such a sliding means that the emission and absorption of the tachyon, from any point of view, occurred in systems A and B at the same time according to their own clocks. It is clear that it cannot be otherwise: no matter what frame of reference we look from, according to the own clocks A and B, the events of radiation and absorption have the only meaning.

Each frame of reference corresponds to its relative velocities of systems A and B. We can also say this: we jump from one laboratory frame to another, assuming that it is the speed of this laboratory frame that changes. The diagram is divided into three ranges of relative velocities, or, the same thing, the velocities of the laboratory frame of reference. The first range is the frames of reference, from the point of view of which the tachyon moves normally from the past to the future. The adjacent table shows the movement parameters: the speed of the tachyon and the two IFRs exchanging this tachyon. The second interval, or rather, is not even an interval, but the only rest frame in which the tachyon velocity is equal to infinity. The world line of the tachyon in this rest frame is shown by a bold red arrow. As can be seen from the table, this case corresponds to equal and oppositely directed velocities of IFRs A and B exchanging tachyon. In this case, the laboratory system is average or symmetrical for them. The third speed interval includes all laboratory IFRs in which the tachyon has non-physical motion parameters.

In addition to superluminal speed, the tachyon also moves into the past. The phenomenon of movement into the past is inherent exclusively in the special theory of relativity. Only its mathematics, when applied to superluminal objects, inevitably leads to instantaneous communication and to a non-physical phenomenon - movement into the past. However, it is impossible to imagine a device that sends a signal to the past. Of course, we are not talking about fantasy novels and mysticism.

In addition, the infinitely high speed forces special relativity to draw absurd conclusions. For any IFR, except for the laboratory system shown in the figure and the like, the speed of the tachyon will be different from infinity, from instantaneous transmission. However, suppose that the signal was sent across the entire universe. From the point of view of the considered laboratory reference system - instantly, from a planet on one edge of the Universe to a planet on the other. Ideally, direct and return letters are sent. It is easy to verify this in the rest frame on the diagram, simply by intercepting some of these messages. As can be seen from the diagrams in Fig. 1, there are such IFRs in which the speed of this tachyon (writing) only exceeds the speed of light, but not instantaneous. Therefore, such an IFR, for example, near one of the two planets mentioned, cannot explain such an exchange of letters. Including those shown in the diagram. From their point of view, it will take about 20 billion years (in their rest systems, the tachyon still moves faster than light) for the letter to reach the addressee, and the answer to the sender. Reference systems cease to be equal, as required by the theory of relativity.

In superluminal "extensions" of special relativity, the so-called principle of reinterpretation is currently used as an additional postulate as the main tool. According to this principle, a tachyon moving into the past and therefore having a negative energy can be regarded as an antitachyon moving normally into the future and having a positive energy. However, this seemingly scientific phrase hides an absurd essence. None of the supporters of the reinterpretation wants to see that the seemingly reasonable and logical at first glance "emission of the antitachyon" means a non-existent emission, the emission of which was not:

Figure 2 shows a copy of the illustration for the article by E.Recami "The Tolman-Regge Antitelephone Paradox: Its Solution by Tachyon Mechanics". The article deals with the so-called "antibodyphone paradox" and proposes its solution within the framework of tachyon mechanics based on the principle of reinterpretation. From system A, tachyon 1 is sent to system B, from where a response tachyon 2 is sent to system A. As we see, according to the conditions of the problem in rest frame A, tachyon 2 moves in the opposite direction of time, into the past. As a solution, a reinterpretation of the second tachyon is proposed. It should be considered as an antitachyon emitted by system A. In this case, it would seem that everything falls into place: the antitachyon moves normally - from the past to the future. Antitachyon in this case was emitted by system A. But the question arises: on what basis is it asserted that system A emitted, emitted antitachyon? It wasn't! There is not and was not in system A a device intended for the emission, emission of antitachyons, and at the indicated moment in time no one emitted antitachyons in system A.

Such an "emission that was not there" is an absurd statement, contrary to logic and scientific principles. How can one talk about the emission of a particle at some point in time if no one emitted anything at that moment? There is only one correct solution to this problem: the special theory of relativity is incapable of solving problems with superluminal signals.

In addition, as is known, superluminal correlations, interactions clearly, in reality, in a specific physical experiment demonstrate quantum entanglement, non-locality. However, no interaction, no matter how illusory and mystical (non-local) it may seem, can occur without the exchange of some other material carriers. Thus, quantum nonlocality not only poorly agrees with the theory of relativity, but also definitely contradicts it.

Actually, the illusory nature of a tachyon is not an exclusive feature of special relativity. The speed of its movement, exceeding the speed of light, automatically leads to the appearance of mirages. Indeed, we never observe any object directly. Our eyes receive light reflected from objects. A tachyon can also be considered such a reflecting or radiating object. When the tachyon rapidly flies past the observer, the light from it begins to flow to the observer after the tachyon itself has already moved away. This phenomenon does not in the least contradict classical physics; it does not require any relativistic transformations.

Let us consider how the process of tachyon motion looks like on dynamic Minkowski diagrams. To begin with, consider the case when the speed of the tachyon is 3 times the speed of light:

The rest frame of the diagram shows the observer D, located at a distance of 200 units from the origin. The world line t D of the observer D is shown in green. All the events occurring on the diagrams are on the same horizontal line, shown by the orange line - the line of the present (time) of the rest system. Everything below this line has already happened, everything above it can happen in the future. At the initial moment of time, a tachyon is emitted from the origin of coordinates, which in this case has a speed of 3 s - three speeds of light. On its way, every 20 units, there are recording devices, which are shown by gray dashed vertical segments. When the tachyon reaches each of these recorders, it either lights a lamp on it, or turns on all its side illumination, or gives some other signal at the speed of light. The observer D does not see the tachyon itself, he sees only the signals emitted by the tachyon from these control points.

At the moment of time 66.7 units in the case under consideration, the tachyon reaches the observer. At this moment, the process of registration by the observer D of the signals initiated by the tachyon begins. Since the speed of the tachyon is high, it quickly skips the meeting point and, moving away, no longer has any effect on the process. The observer begins to receive signals from the points of registration: from the radiation side and from the side where the tachyon has gone. These signals are depicted in the diagrams by red arrows. The lower end of the arrow (marked with a dot) is associated with the moment of signal emission, and the upper end, the arrow, shows the place in space-time where the signal carrier (photon) is located. At the moment when the next signal carrier - the arrow reaches the observer D, the observer fixes the "flare" or "picture" of the tachyon corresponding to its position at the moment when this flash was initiated. That is, the observer will, as it were, see a tachyon at this point in space, as shown in the diagram in the form of images of a tachyon. But, let us recall, there is no tachyon there, it is only a light (signal) that came from the tachyon when it was there. Tachyons, depicted in the diagrams as two more colorful copies of it, are actually mirages.

It is obvious that the mirage receding towards the radiation is visible to the observer as the front side of the tachyon (the "face" of the tachyon). On the contrary, a mirage receding in the direction of the tachyon movement is visible to the observer from the side of his “nape”.

In the diagram, slanted dashed lines represent the world lines of light. An interesting pattern is visible: the “returning” mirage of a tachyon has a speed exceeding the speed of light, but less than the tachyon itself. But a mirage moving after a tachyon has a speed less than the speed of light. Perhaps this is due to the rather low speed of the tachyon? Let's look at diagrams in which the tachyon has a speed of 10 speeds of light:

In this diagram, as in the previous one, the tachyon mirage moving after it also moves above the world line of light, that is, its speed in this case is also less than the speed of light. The point of visibility on the mirage of the tachyon is its “occipital” part, it is this part that is above the world line of light. In order to finally verify the discovered regularity, let's consider another diagram in which the speed of the tachyon exceeds the speed of light by 100 times:

In the diagram, the world line of the tachyon has almost merged with the horizontal axis, and the tachyon itself in the dynamic diagram flies so fast that it is almost invisible. Here we can finally make sure that the speed of the tachyon mirage moving after it is less than the speed of light. At the same time, it is clear that an increase in the speed of the tachyon leads to the approximation of the speed of the mirage to the speed of light. The second, "returning" mirage, as can be seen in the diagrams, on the contrary, reduced its speed, bringing it as close as possible to the speed of light. In this diagram, the "visible" part of the mirage is its front side, and it practically slides along the world line of light. This means that its speed is close to the speed of light. Note that the speed of the tachyon itself, which caused these mirages, exceeds the speed of light by 100 times.

In conclusion, it is logical to consider the reverse situation, the case when the speed of the tachyon is close to the speed of light. It is inconvenient to take too low a speed, since the whole picture quickly goes beyond the diagram. Therefore, we take the speed equal to two speeds of light:

As expected, the speed of the "catching up" mirage has become even less, and the speed of the "returning" mirage has increased.

In the considered diagrams of tachyon mirages, we did not use the mathematics of the special theory of relativity. The only thing that is present here from her is the dynamic Minkowski diagrams, which in this case demonstrate their high visibility and, one might say, universality.

It should be pointed out that the trajectories of the mirages were calculated from obvious logical considerations and intuitively found relationships. To calculate the velocities of the antitachyon - the "returning" mirage and the "catching up" mirage, the following equations were used:

vreturn- the speed of the "returning" mirage;

vgreat dane- the speed of the "catching up" mirage;

vtach is the speed of the tachyon.

It clearly follows from the equations that the speed of mirages approaches the speed of light as the speed of the tachyon increases. The speed of the "returning" mirage approaches the speed of light from below, and the speed of the "catching up" mirage - from above.

So, the question posed in the title of the article can be answered: the speed of a tachyon is determined only by the speed of the frame of reference and can have a value from the minimum exceeding the speed of light to infinity.

Tachyons live in a strange world where everything moves faster than light. Losing energy, tachyons begin to move faster - which, of course, is contrary to common sense. Moreover, a tachyon, completely deprived of energy, moves at an infinite speed. Conversely, acquiring energy, tachyons slow down until they reach the speed of light.

What makes tachyons especially strange is the fact that they have an imaginary mass. (By "imaginary," we mean that their mass is multiplied by the square root of minus one, or i.) If you take Einstein's famous equations and replace m with im, a miracle happens. The particle speed will suddenly become faster than the speed of light.

Because of this, strange situations arise. When a tachyon flies through matter, it loses energy as it collides with atoms. But, losing energy, it accelerates, which is why collisions only intensify and occur more often. In theory, these collisions should cause further loss of energy and, consequently, further acceleration. There is a vicious circle, and the tachyon itself, naturally, gains infinite speed!

(Tachyons are different from both antimatter and negative matter. Antimatter has positive energy, moves slower than light, and can be produced in our particle accelerators. According to the theory, antimatter obeys the law of gravity and, as expected, falls down. Antimatter corresponds to ordinary matter moving back in time. Negative matter has negative energy and also moves slower than light, but under the influence of gravity falls upward, i.e. away from the attracting body of ordinary matter. Negative matter has not yet been seen in the laboratory. In theory, in large quantities it can serve as fuel for a time machine.Tachyons travel faster than light and have an imaginary mass; how they behave under the influence of gravity is unclear. They, too, have not yet been obtained in the laboratory.

Tachyons, of course, are very strange particles, but physicists study them seriously; one might name, for example, the late Gerald Feinberg of Columbia University and George Sudarshan of the University of Texas at Austin. The problem is, no one has ever seen a tachyon in the lab. Reliable experimental evidence for the existence of tachyons would be a violation of causality. Feinberg even suggested that physicists investigate the laser beam before turning on the laser. If tachyons exist, then it is possible that the light of the laser beam can be detected even before the apparatus is turned on.

In science fiction, tachyons are regularly used as a means of sending a message to the past, to the ancestors. But from the physics of the phenomenon it is completely incomprehensible whether this is even theoretically possible. Feinberg, for example, believed that the emission of tachyons moving forward in time exactly corresponded to the absorption of negative energy tachyons moving backward in time (similar to the situation with antimatter), so no violation of causality occurs.

Science fiction aside, physicists currently believe that tachyons may have existed at the time of the Big Bang, violating causality, but now they no longer exist. Moreover, it is very possible that tachyons played a significant role in the fact that the Universe exploded in general. In this sense, they play an important role in some big bang theories.

Tachyons have another funny property. When introduced into any theory, they destabilize the "vacuum", i.e. the lowest energy state of the system. If there are tachyons in the system, it means that it is in a state of "false vacuum", and therefore, it is unstable and will collapse to a state of true vacuum.

Imagine a dam that holds water in a lake. This is the "false vacuum". Although the dam appears to be quite reliable, there is an even lower energy state. And if a crack appears in the dam, water begins to rapidly flow out of the lake and flow down to sea level - then the system reaches a state of true vacuum.

Similarly, it is believed that the Universe before the Big Bang existed in a state of false vacuum, where there were tachyons. But their presence meant that this was not the lowest energy state of the system, and therefore the system was unstable. Then a tiny "tear" appeared in the fabric of space-time, representing the true vacuum. The gap began to grow, a bubble appeared. Tachyons still existed outside the bubble, but they were not inside. With the growth of the bubble, the Universe that we know appeared - the Universe without tachyons. This was the Big Bang.

One theory that cosmologists take very seriously is that the initial process of inflation was started by a single tachyon known as the "inflaton". The inflationary universe theory claims that it originated as a tiny bubble of space-time that went through a super-rapid period of expansion (inflation). Physicists believe that the universe originally existed in a state of false vacuum, where the tachyon was the inflationary field. But the presence of the tachyon destabilized the vacuum, and tiny bubbles formed. Inside one of these bubbles, the inflationary field found itself in a state of true vacuum. This bubble began to rapidly inflate until it turned into our Universe. Inflation has disappeared inside our bubble-universe, which is why it cannot be registered in our Universe. It turns out that tachyons are a bizarre quantum state in which objects move faster than light and, perhaps, even causality is violated. But tachyons have long since disappeared, possibly giving life to the Universe itself.

Probably, all this looks like idle reasoning that cannot be verified. But the first experiment to test the theory of false vacuum begins with the launch in Switzerland, in the vicinity of Geneva, the Large Hadron Collider. One of the main tasks of the LHC is the discovery of the Higgs bosons, the last particle of the Standard Model that has not yet been found, the last piece of the scientific puzzle. (The Higgs particle is so important and so elusive that Nobel laureate Leon Lederman called it the “god particle.”)

Physicists believe that the Higgs boson began life as a tachyon. In a false vacuum, none of the subatomic particles had mass. But the presence of the tachyon destabilized the vacuum, and the universe moved into a new state, a new vacuum, in which the Higgs boson turned into an ordinary particle. After this transition - from the state of a tachyon to the state of an ordinary particle - subatomic particles acquire the mass that we measure today in the laboratory. Thus, the discovery of the Higgs boson will not only put in place the last missing piece of the Standard Model, but also confirm that the tachyon state once existed, but later transformed into an ordinary particle.

Newtonian physics completely rejects the possibility of predicting the future. The iron rule of cause and effect is never broken. Quantum theory allows for other states of matter, such as antimatter, which corresponds to ordinary matter moving backward in time, but the principle of causality is not violated. Moreover, antimatter in quantum theory is necessary to restore causality. Tachyons at first glance violate the principle of causality, but physicists believe that they have fulfilled their purpose - they launched the Big Bang mechanism and disappeared from our Universe.

After the two dancers regained their composure, they stared at each other in amazement, because just as the male dancer had never seen a woman dance before, so the female dancer had never seen a man dance before. And then, after a brief moment of hesitation and without a trace of shyness, they began to dance together. And the longer they danced, the more aware each of them became of the rhythm and movements of the other, and thus they inspired, enchanted, and transformed each other.
The light in heaven began to sparkle brighter and the sounds of heaven began to accompany this new dance that was first danced in heaven.
The two dancers began to spin and move around in geometric patterns. Their love for each other grew so immensely that they soon began to dance very quickly and in perfect harmony with each other.
Then, all of a sudden, the metallic ringing they had created by their collision returned from afar. And although this sound was only an echo, it still had a strong and enchanting effect on the dancers, and they transformed it into a radiant vortex of crystalline light.
This funnel of light was more amazing and sparkling than all the light in heaven, and it was surrounded by sound, which consisted of many different sounds.
With each circular movement of their light dance, the dancers created a shower of small sparks that shimmered in the sky.
And this continues to this day...

One day, the people who were gathering under the heavens noticed these sparks, although some only felt them rather than saw them. And those who could not see these sparks, but only felt them, knew for sure that they were there. Throughout the long night, people indulged in the charm of these sparks, dipping their bodies and souls in the light coming from two dancers. This went on and on and when the night ended people felt refreshed, healed and stronger.

They spread their knowledge to all four corners of the world and people all over the Earth could indulge in the charm of these sparks and the strengthening effect that they gave.
And people wanted to give these sparks a name that no one had heard before, so that it would evoke an image, feeling or representation of the power and love that these sparks can give people.

Thus the name "tachyon" was created, a word that describes the whirling dance of man and woman, which is still with us today.

The device, which eventually turned out to be the prototype of the tachyon engine, was designed by her as a "substance separator". Objects placed in its field disappeared, "split" into their constituent particles and, presumably, dissipated in the atmosphere. Most concerned about her own safety, the doctor was in no hurry to share the intermediate results of her work. On the contrary, Estevets went headlong into it, focusing on research in two directions: firstly, she wanted to measure the intensity of the radiation of "separated" particles into the atmosphere, and secondly, she tried to determine the power of the "separator" itself, experimenting with objects from various materials and weights.

The doctor failed to determine the “radiation strength”, but experiments with objects with different physical characteristics gave unexpected results.

But even then chance intervened. In the meantime, Dr. Estevetz did not even suspect that the tested items were still moving somewhere, and not “separated”, but in their entirety. She also did not know that the location of a moved object depends on the mutual influence of the magnitude of the field, the mass of the object, as well as the direction and speed attached to the object when exposed to the field (during these experiments, the rotation of the Laboratory Station provided both direction and speed).

One fine day, Dr. Estevetz placed a titanium blank in the field of her device. Almost at the same moment, the Laboratory Station was rocked by an explosion that shattered one of its bulkheads. The cause of the explosion was found out when a titanium blank was found stuck in the bulkhead. The blank, having passed through hyperspace, entered the physical space, already occupied by the bulkhead. Since the blank turned out to be harder than the bulkhead, the latter could not stand it and tore.

Naturally, no one attached importance to this incident, until Dr. Estevetz, rather timidly, admitted that the disc belonged to her.

The continuation of the research was called into question. Dr. Estevetz herself, embarrassed that she did not understand her own experiments, became even more withdrawn and suspicious. The scientific director of the station was torn between the desire to continue the experiments begun by Dr. Estevetz, and the temptation to remove her from research. The economic administrator of the station opposed the entire project, arguing that the entire station was at risk of suffering from destruction.

But Dr. Estevetz's research has gone too far to be stopped. Over time, the benefits they could bring became apparent. New models of "substance separator" were constructed. Experiments on moving objects through hyperspace have resumed. The results of the experiments were processed by computers. Based on the results obtained, hypotheses were built, which, in turn, were tested by regular experiments.

So, the tachyon engine, in the end, was in the service of people. With its help, the transition from one dimension to another became possible immediately, as soon as the main characteristics of the hyperspace field (mass, speed, hysteresis) were calculated, which happened long before the comprehension of the hyperspace itself by the scientific community of the Earth.

As always, humanity first took a step, and only then thought about its consequences.
