Dreadlocks on part of the hair. How dreadlocks are made, what they are and how to properly care for them

Dreadlocks are traditionally associated with Rastafarianism - a modern religious movement, and its adherents are usually called Rastafarians. But such hairstyle (dreadlocks)) is considered ancient, since for many years it was found among many cultures and peoples in completely different regions of the world.

The peoples of Ethiopia and Jamaica have one legend that says that when the end of the world comes, the god Jah will reach out from heaven and pull all the people into heaven by the dreadlocks that were faithful to him.

In ancient times, tangled locks symbolized freedom, and it is not surprising, since their owners never used combs or combs, they never had their hair cut in their entire lives.

In our time, such a hairstyle can be a sign of belonging to some subculture, a method of showing national pride, a tribute to fashion and religious beliefs. As a rule, dreadlocks are now being done by young people who want to emphasize their individuality.

Now there are two types of locks: natural And artificial.

In fact, natural ones are tangles made in the form of braids and tubes, secured using a variety of hairdressing devices. Many people believe that it is almost impossible to restore the locks to their former appearance if for some reason the locks have fallen out of favor, and after unbraiding them you can easily lose from thirty to fifty percent of your hair!

But this is partly not true - a professional hairdresser, using new cosmetics (masks, balms), will be able to restore the former beauty of the curls. This procedure, however, is quite lengthy, expensive and painful, so before making dreadlocks, think carefully about whether you really need it.

There are many methods for creating real locks. Let's get acquainted with the most popular ones.

Weaving with string or hook

You need to take: elastic bands, wax, which is used for weaving dreadlocks, crochet hook.

Mark equal zones on your head in the form of triangles or diamonds. Secure the strands with a regular hair elastic.

Next, take a strand and divide it in half to the base to create a tangle. Then divide it again and repeat the manipulation. The more you pull the curl at the base, the thicker the dreadlock will be. Also, separate and twist the curl until a small tangled tail remains of the strand.

Now start crocheting. Pass it along the entire length through the dreadlock, wrap it around the protruding tip several times, and pull it back out the same way. This way you will fix the lock, make it strong and not so shaggy.

You can make the rest of the dreadlocks using the same manipulation. The hook can also be replaced with a guitar string.

Twisting

You need to take: rubber bands, comb, special wax.

Divide your hair into equal sizes (one to two centimeters). Secure each strand with rubber bands. Release one strand from the fastening and twist it clockwise. Using a comb, knock down the twisted strand and fix it with gel. Twist the end of the lock with your hands, and then fix it again. So process all the strands. Apply gel to your hair.

At first, you can use rubber bands at the ends and roots of dreadlocks for fixation.

Braids

You need to take: special wax.

Divide your hair into square equal sections, the size of which is approximately an inch. Secure the strands with elastic bands. Remove the elastic band from each curl in turn, weave it into a strong braid, while securing the remaining ponytail with an elastic band.

After a large number of small braids appear on your head, cover everything with wax, roll each of them intensively and for a long time with your palms until the dreadlock is completely formed.

Tearing and twisting

You need to take: gum and special wax.

Lather your hair with shampoo until foam appears. Twist them clockwise without rinsing with water. After this, rinse in water without separating into strands or combing. When your hair is dry, tear the resulting clump into strands (the number depends on your desire). Twist each strand separately while adding wax. Then roll each of them intensively with your palms.

To secure each part of the hairstyle, use elastic bands. You should roll it every day until the hair completely falls off.

Rubbing with wool

You need to take: special wax and wool mittens.

Put mittens on your hands and rub your hair in a circular motion until you get tangled hair. After this, tear them into equal parts and rub each part with mittens several times. Secure everything with wax. It is necessary to repeat this procedure every day until the hairstyle is achieved.

Safe dreadlocks with Kanekalon were invented quite recently. Their main advantage is that they do not spoil the structure of natural hair: they can be easily attached to strands and just as easily removed.

The strands can have a length of six to seven centimeters. In addition, dreadlocks can have a variety of lengths and shades. This hairstyle can last from two to six months.

The disadvantage of such dreadlocks is the high price. It should also be noted that such strands smell unpleasant when wet.

Artificial dreadlocks

I usually do it in hairdressing salons, where the client himself chooses the appropriate color, texture and length.

However, you can saddle them at home yourself.

You need to take: elastic bands, hair wax and kanekalon blanks.

Divide your hair into equal sections. You should get as many strands as you want to have dreadlocks. Secure them with rubber bands.

Take the workpiece, secure it with rubber bands on both sides, comb it well, treat it with wax, fold it in half and attach it to the original strand of hair using braids. Wax again.

You can also take a shortcut: weave an artificial preform into a living strand, then treat each dreadlock with wax.

Before you start braiding dreadlocks, wash your hair with regular shampoo. Do not use balms, conditioners or other products that smooth your hair.

After you have made dreadlocks, within a month You are not allowed to wash your hair.

One month after weaving, use egg or tar shampoo to wash your hair. After the procedure, rinse your hair with boiled water (one liter) with dissolved sea salt in it (one tablespoon). This will give your hair more frizz and maintain the structure of each dreadlock.

Recently, dreadlocks have come into fashion, or they are also called dreadlocks or locks. This type of casual hairstyle features unusual thin braids of tangled strands that create the effect of a lion's mane. In the lesson you will find all the necessary information, as well as a detailed description of how to make dreadlocks at home.

In ancient times, people believed that this type of hairstyle had religious significance. Jamaicans believed that a head decorated in this way would help save them in the event of the end of the world. They believed that the god Jah would lift them by these pigtails and pull them up.
Today everyone has their own opinion:

  • some of you liked them because they allow you to look beautiful and rarely take care of your hair;
  • for young people it is self-expression, style and outrageousness, the opportunity to stand out from the crowd;
  • Girls and older men consider dreadlocks a philosophy of life.

This hairstyle is a Nigerian hairstyle, but white rappers or reggae singers often wear it this way. The most prominent artist preaching the Rasta ideology and the bearer of a shock of dreadlocks was Bob Marley. In Russia, Decl was a popular tree bearer.

Execution Features

Different techniques pursue one goal - random tangling (matling) of hair in strands.
  1. Dreadlocks are made using several techniques to create a tangled braid. What unites them all is the process of combing. After it, the strand can be rubbed with wool, wax or paraffin, and then the master makes the weave with his hands or crochet. They also resort to curling and combing with a brush.
  2. Felt, wool or Kanekalon are added to the strand to obtain volume. Even in the case of sparse hair, a pseudo cap of tangled braids is formed.
  3. Those with thin and brittle hair should prefer a safe type of dreadlocks that is not capable of causing mechanical damage to their own hair.
  4. The cost of creating a hairstyle is quite high. How many? Depends on the number of braids. The fewer there are, the easier it is to care for your hair and the cheaper it is to do.
Attention! The minimum number of locks is 30 pieces.

Most popular types

You can braid hair in different ways. The lesson covers the most commonly used techniques.

Dangerous dreadlocks

These are felted braids from your own hair (natural). They are worn for more than a year if correction is performed in a timely manner. This variety is very difficult to unravel, but it is possible. It is more difficult to untangle such styling when it was done a long time ago. Then the braids need to be cut off with scissors, leaving the regrown roots. Subsequently, the hair has to grow out for a long time.
Loki is performed thick or thin, depending on the client’s wishes. First, the hair is divided into sections, the strands are combed, felted, then worked with a simple crochet hook measuring from 0.5 to 1 mm.

The smaller the tool, the tighter the weave.

At the end they are sometimes secured with wax. The photographs show the main stages of the process.

Attention! The technique is harmful to the hair, which is why it is called dangerous.

Braiding such braids can be painful, especially the painful process of unbraiding. Before deciding on such a hairstyle, you need to think carefully.

Industrial dreadlocks

A type of natural braids, but with a braided frame made of thin wire or string. They are worn longer than the previous type, but sleeping on them is very uncomfortable. The girl in the picture clearly demonstrates that such dreadlocks look impressive.

Safe locks made from artificial materials

They are made by weaving artificial curls - kanekalons. They may have one or two ends. The double tip gives more volume to the hair. Externally, the hairstyle looks neater than in previous techniques. When weaving correctly, craftsmen get a magnificent effect. Colored material allows you to choose fashionable shades for locks, matching your hair.

Presented are blue and chestnut colors of strands that look very stylish.

Pink, gray and red are also in fashion. Kanekalon should be woven using simple sewing threads or floss.

They wear a hairstyle made from artificial hair for no more than three months, and then unbraid it. The advantage of this technique is that undoing these braids is quite simple.

All safe dreadlocks are divided into classic, D.E and S.E dreadlocks.

Classic options

They resemble natural ones, but Kanekalon is woven into the strands using braids. At the end they are camouflaged inside. These locks are worn for no more than two or three months, after which they are unraveled, otherwise they will roll down.

Classic De-dreadlocks with and without color transition

D.E (Double Ended)

They have a double end. Kanekalon is attached to the hair in a figure eight pattern.

Everyone chooses the color of the woven strands according to their own taste.

DE lightweight, very voluminous
De lightweight, with less extreme volume
DE, crocheted with knots

S.E (Single Ended)

Single end. Translation and the essence of this type.

CE dreadlocks, lightweight, woven into the back of the head

Jah dreadlocks

Performed by specialists in factories. They are very thin, smooth and colorful. This look is often complemented with braids, which decorate the hairstyle, as well as special braids (Senegalese).

Double dreadlocks (spiral)

Such locks begin to be woven from their own strands. Next, Kanekalon is woven into them step by step, connecting them in a spiral. You will get a drawing like the one in the attached photo. This is a female option, because colored locks appeal to the weaker sex.

Permanent

Dreadlocks are made wavy, which looks interesting and original. The difficulty is that you will need a very experienced craftsman, as well as careful care.

Nepalese dreadlocks or felt dreadlocks

They are pulled over their own strands like covers. The disadvantage is that visually they look unnatural, but they are completely harmless and can be easily removed.

Hair length for dreadlocks

There is a false myth that short hair is not suitable for this hairstyle and it must grow to a long length. It is enough to have a haircut of 8–10 cm. These will be short mini dreadlocks. A person with such a hairstyle looks like an African.

If you don’t like the option with a short length, lengthen the strands with decorative kanekalon, which is very easy to remove. Weaving is done quite simply with a damp cloth and an electric iron. More details in the video lesson.

Materials for dreadlocks

Safe locks can be made from materials such as:

  1. Felt.
  2. Artificial material.
  3. Strands from natural hair.

When choosing between felt and Kanekalon, remember the disadvantages and advantages that they have. Felt braids make it possible not to wear a scarf or hat in winter, but they are hot in summer. They have a wide variety of shades and do not create the effect of skin irritation, that is, they do not make your head itch.

Kanekalon braids look more natural and hold better on short strands.

Dreadlocks for women and men

Men and women love to weave dreadlocks. Braids are easy to care for and easy to style into a spectacular hairstyle. As for the ladies' options, they can be of any length, and go well even with shaved temples. Ladies tend to combine hair and makeup colors as in the photo.

For women, craftsmen perform original weaving, which is similar to natural felting.

For men, the length can also be any, but there is no makeup, so they don’t have to think about combining it with their hairstyle.

Weaving methods in salons

Experienced craftsmen make afro braids using a variety of techniques:

  • Using a regular hook or string.
  • Weaving by hand, without loops.
  • Backcombing of strands, which will lead to hair matting.
  • Rub with a woolen piece of cloth, without using shampoo.
  • Natural matting that you will get by neglecting the comb.
  • Perm using chemicals to create permanent dreadlocks.
  • Rolling up strands of African texture.
  • The action of tearing followed by twisting onto the wax.
  • Formation of dreadlocks using a soft brush.
  • Using rubber bands.
  • Weaving artificial kanekalons.
  • Forming locks using felt.
  • Twisting with thin wire.
  • Fastening with rubber bands and fixing with a special cream.

How to weave at home

But not only in beauty salons you can achieve this hairstyle. There are home methods for braiding dreadlocks, with which you can even do it yourself.

The easiest way

Do it yourself - let the dreadlocks form naturally. Such locks are called ROOTS. To do this, just stop washing your hair and combing. This process for European hair takes from 6 months to several years. To speed up the formation of such tangles, rinse your hair in salted water once a week, and then form locks with your hands, tearing the matted head into strands.

Roots

The disadvantages of this method include the significant damage that is caused to the hair at the moment of breaking. Therefore, you should not dream of a normal length after unbraiding. And also the shape of the strands will be terrifying, some of them will turn out to be flat and large, while others will be too narrow.

Backcomb and hook

Tight dreadlocks long lasting. Performed at a length of 8 cm.

Advantages of the technique:

The hairstyle looks like dreadlocks from the very beginning. Easily given the desired shape and size.

Minuses:

It will take a lot of time and a couple of experienced friends who are ready to help.

Wool method

  1. Using any woolen product (a piece of fabric, a mitten, a scarf, a sock or even a sweater), rub your head for 15–20 minutes until the hair begins to tangle.
  2. Tear this entire mass into separate strands with your hands.
  3. Rub each curl for another 15 minutes until a dense dreadlock is formed. If necessary, go through it again.
  4. Tuck any remaining loose hair into the nearest locks.
  5. Finally, seal the effect with wax if desired.
You can apply this method yourself - and this is a plus.

Minus – the aesthetics of the locks leaves much to be desired. Predicting the size of a dreadlock is quite difficult, and the look is not attractive, nor can you unravel it if you don’t like the result. Therefore, there is only one consequence - to shave it at the root.

Twisting

Let's talk about the disadvantages right away. This method is only suitable for African hair.

It consists of dividing the hair into small equal sections, secured with elastic bands. Subsequently, the strands are twisted clockwise by hand.

They often resort to using a comb, which is used to knock down the hair at the ends (for the European type). This method is called false dreadlocks. Finally, each lock is treated with wax.

By the way, you can also put elastic bands on the ends and then wear them without taking them off for the first couple of weeks.

It is surprising that this method is considered durable, although it is forbidden to wash your hair for a whole month!

Video about the twisting method

Twisting and tearing

One of the methods that can be done independently, but causes obvious damage to the hair. In order to use it, you will need a special shampoo for the formation of dreadlocks.

First wash your hair with this shampoo, turning your hands clockwise (or counterclockwise). Dry naturally. And then tear this total mass into strands.

Start working on all the curls in turn, twisting between your palms, periodically treating with a special gel.

These manipulations with each dreadlock must be performed daily until the result is satisfactory.

Attaching artificial strands

The most gentle method, called the safest one. A step-by-step master class from KATO_Katosha will show you how to do this.

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • an ordinary hair straightener;
  • artificial kanekalon;
  • spray bottle for spraying water;
  • comb with a thin long tail;
  • soft elastic bands;
  • scissors, threads and clips of different sizes.

Weaving

Dreadlocks take the desired shape from the first minutes of work. An easy method to follow even for beginners.

  1. It starts in the standard way - by dividing the head into sectors.
  2. Then each section is twisted into a rope and with a sharp movement is torn into two parts.
  3. The division into halves continues until the tip, which is pulled into a curl with a hook.
  4. Secure the result with wax.

Video: Weaving method

The lesson itself is about how to make and attach an artificial dreadlock, so it can also be watched by those who want to weave Kanekalon. However, in the first minutes the master uses the weaving method.

How to properly care

In order for a tangled hairstyle to be beautiful and last a long time, it requires some care.

  1. Locks are washed approximately once every 10 days, not more often. The first month it is better to do this even less often. Do not use balms and softening shampoos, they spoil the structure.
  2. To wash your hair, it is better to take tar soap or the same shampoo. The usual one will not work in this case, because it contains aggressive elements harmful to dreadlocks.
  3. There is an option for washing in salt water. To do this, dissolve two packs of salt in a bath of warm water.
  4. Dreadlocks love daily attention. To do this, you need to “twist” them with your fingers in different directions in the direction from the roots to the tips.
  5. It is advisable to make corrections once a month, picking up stray hairs and braiding the area at the roots.
  6. It is better to remove artificial locks every 2-3 months and replace them with new ones.
  7. Dreadlocks that begin to “grow together” need to be carefully separated with your hands from time to time.
  8. Afro braids look attractive and impressive for a long time when the strands are periodically braided using the artificial Kanekalon material.

You will need

  • - comb for combing;
  • - hairpins;
  • - hair bands;
  • - wool threads;
  • - hair wax.

Instructions

Assess the length and condition of your hair. After twisting, the size of the strands will decrease by a third, so 15 cm is the minimum hair length for this hairstyle. Keep in mind that dreadlocks will not improve the condition of your curls. On the contrary, after unbraiding, the hair may be seriously damaged and will need to be cut short.

Wash your hair with soap the day before dreadlocks. Avoid using conditioner to make your hair easier to tangle. In beauty salons, before braiding, a light perm is done for this purpose.

Divide your hair into sections about the thickness of your index finger. The optimal quantity is 20-50 strands. At the base of each dreadlock there should be a square with a side of one and a half centimeters or less. Secure the separated strands with hairpins or thin elastic bands. Carefully separate your hair so that short hairs from one area do not fall into another, otherwise dreadlocks may appear at the roots.

Use a special comb with teeth of different lengths to create backcombing. Comb each strand thoroughly, moving from the ends of the hair to the roots. This procedure may take several hours. The more tightly you comb your hair, the better quality your dreadlocks will be.

Twist each strand, rubbing it with your palms, until it turns into a dense hair strand. For volume, you can add woolen threads to the dreadlocks at this stage.

Form rounded ends of dreadlocks. To do this, carefully comb each end, twist it and secure it tightly with an elastic band at a distance of 1 cm from the end. Carefully treat each dreadlock along its entire length with hair wax.

Roll each strand once or twice daily for two weeks. Wash your hair with soap or natural shampoo. Do not use conditioner or balm. After two weeks, remove the elastic bands from the ends of your hair.

The name “dreadlocks” translates to “terrible curls.” According to the beliefs of Jamaican Rastafarians, when the end of the world comes, their god Jah will drag them to heaven by these locks. This hairstyle became very popular thanks to Bob Marley, the most famous musician in Jamaica.

The second creators of dreadlocks are considered to be Ethiopian hermits who secluded themselves in the mountains. Their hair did not know either soap or comb, it became tangled and grew back like that.

There are many methods for weaving dreadlocks, but given the complexity of this process, it is better to contact an experienced specialist or practice dreadlocks on artificial hair or for quite a long time.

To make successful dreadlocks, it is advisable to grow your hair to 15 cm or more, because after formation the length of the dreadlock is reduced by one third. Alternatively, you can lengthen your hair with artificial hair or add dreadlocks. The range of materials is very wide, as is the color range - you can even choose neon or glow in the dark.

Preparing hair for dreadlocks

Before making dreadlocks, you need to consider the number of finished dreadlocks and their shape. The greater their number, the thinner they are. The optimal number of dreadlocks is from 25 to 50 pieces, depending on the thickness of the hair. You can choose any shape of ready-made dreadlocks - from polygons. Usually squares or pentagons are chosen.

A day before you start braiding, you need to wash your hair with shampoo without conditioner or soap so that the hair is not smooth and can be easily tangled.

Immediately before dreadlocks are formed, the hair is divided into segments and secured at the base with elastic bands. It is important that strands from one segment do not fall into the neighboring one, otherwise dreadlocks cannot be avoided from merging at the roots.

It makes sense to decide in advance how to fix the ends of the dreadlocks: you can leave the ends free, or you can weave the ends into the dreadlock itself using a hook.

Ways to make dreadlocks

There are several ways to make dreadlocks, depending on the materials and experience available:

  • weaving them or is the fastest and most painless method;

  • twist strands, roll them up and tear them;

  • you can leave your hair alone for 2-3 years, only helping the rolled strands to form, but few people have the patience for this method;

  • you can comb your dreadlocks using a special comb and dreadlock wax;

  • you can rub your hair with a woolen cloth or a brush with natural bristles until tangled strands appear - this is a harmful method for the hair; if the dreadlocks are unsuccessful, they will have to be cut off;

  • you can curl your dreadlocks in a salon using chemicals;

  • You can lengthen your hair in dreadlocks with artificial hair (kanekalon) or felt, a big plus is that your hair is not so damaged and you can choose different ones - from natural to neon.

Caring for dreadlocks, which are fashionable today, requires less time than other hairstyles. However, this does not mean that dreadlocks do not need to be looked after at all. Most often it requires braiding dreadlocks. You don’t have to go to a salon to do this – you can do it yourself.

You will need

  • crochet hook, beeswax

Instructions

Wind the strand around the crochet hook two or three times and pull it through the dreadlock. You can simply wrap a long strand around the dreadlock. Gently pull through the stray strands until you are happy with the result.

If you want to braid the ends, then insert the hook through the tip of the selected dreadlock, hook the strand with it and pull it out on the other side. Repeat these steps until you have braided all the hair. If the procedure is performed correctly, you will get a rounded dreadlock.

If your hair is tangled, you can also braid it. Select a dreadlock and rub it to create a springy pad between your fingers and your head. Wrap the dreadlocks in one direction, and the hair that has come out - in the other direction. Insert the hook into the dreadlock from top to bottom and pull through the desired strand. Weave this strand into the pad that you obtained as a result of friction at the beginning of the procedure

If you want the braided dreadlock to become more dense, use the turning technique. Find the longest strand of hair next to the dreadlock. Make the strand as thin as possible. Using a hook (or just your fingers), make a hole between the selected strand of hair and the dreadlock. Take the dreadlock and pull it through the hole, wrapping the selected dreadlock, which will become thick and dense. If the dreadlock was initially bad, then use not one, but several such loops, starting with the longest one. For a more reliable result, secure the tip of the dreadlock with beeswax.

Dreadlocks With kanekalon(by extension) from a distance they look very beautiful and neat, they have a large number of colors (even those that glow in ultraviolet). When you get tired of them, you can remove them without practically damaging your own hair. However, the material of artificial curls is not compatible with high temperatures. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid blow-drying, as well as going to the bathhouse or sauna. This hairstyle feels very hard to the touch.

You will need

  • - Wax
  • - Rubber bands
  • - Synthetic hair (kanekalon)
  • - Regular crochet hook
  • - Comb

Instructions

When you have secured all your hair, remove the elastic from the first strand. Divide her hair into three different sections and add hair to one of them. At the same time, synthetic hair must be three times longer than future ones. Braid your hair in the downward direction along with synthetic hair and secure it with an elastic band at the end.

Roll up the strand until it becomes tangled, and then begin to “weave”, combing it in such a way that the tangled mass falls to the roots. Go over the roots with the comb many times. As a result, the hair will become tangled at the roots. It is not at all necessary to roll up the hair at the very bottom, but you need to roll up the hair that is between your fingers. Continue combing, working slowly until the end of the hair is as tight as possible.

Once you've finished braiding and put the elastic on the end of the dreadlock, wrap the synthetic hair all the way around the dreadlock again and tighten with the elastic. After this, add a little wax to the dreadlock to smooth the hair.

There is another way of dreadlocks - braiding with a string or crochet. Knock the entire strand into one long and large tangle and leave an untangled tip. Take a regular crochet hook and thread it through the dreadlock, then wrap the strand around it several times and pull it back through the dreadlock. This is how the dreadlock is “stitched” with strands and hairs throughout, becoming less shaggy and stronger.

note

Kanekalon dreadlocks can be made either manually or using machines. Hand-made Kanekalon dreadlocks are made using the same methods as dreadlocks made from natural hair, and due to the fact that Kanekalon is very similar to natural hair, Kanekalon dreadlocks are very similar to real dangerous dreadlocks.

Helpful advice

These are dreadlocks that are made in a factory. They are thin matted strands of Kanekalon, they look unusual and it is extremely difficult to recognize dreadlocks in them. They are braided in the same way as DE dreadlocks - using a figure-eight braid, and can also have similar color schemes. By the way, recently there has been a noticeable tendency to make dreadlocks not from kanekalon, but from felt.

Dreadlocks– a popular way among young people to stand out from the crowd. By the way, the owners of this unusual hair are in an advantageous position: they do not need, for example, to comb their hair. Therefore, it’s easier to get ready for university: get up, get dressed and go... No problems with your hair!

You will need

  • - shampoo;
  • - wax;
  • - artificial hair;
  • - elastic bands and clips;
  • - comb;
  • - curlers.

Instructions

Braid using the “Artificial” method. To do this, collect strands (one strand from an area of approximately two square centimeters), braid them, and secure the ends with elastic bands. When you finish the weaving procedure, take one of the strands, remove the fixing elastic band from it and divide it into three equal strands. Then add artificial hair to each strand (the length of the artificial hair should be three times the length of the intended dreadlocks). After this, braid your hair and artificial hair, and secure the end of this braid with an elastic band. When the braid is ready, use the hanging end of the artificial hair to braid the top of the braid (from root to end) and secure the end with an elastic band. Then lubricate the dreadlocks with wax. Repeat this procedure with all strands.

Braid using the Twist and Break method. To this end, during the next wash of your hair, use a smooth movement of your hands to “rub” the hair (movements should only be clockwise). When your hair is dry, divide it into separate strands, then apply wax to each strand and roll it again with your palms. When weaving dreadlocks, this method involves monthly hair removal, followed by twisting of the dreadlocks. The hairstyle will be ready in about four months.

Braid your dreadlocks using the Pin Twist method. To do this, divide your hair into many thin strands and secure them with clips. After this, apply wax to your hair and secure the dreadlocks with hairpins so that these “curls” do not unwind. Use curlers to curl dreadlocks.

note

Unbraiding dreadlocks is a painful procedure! It is better to do it yourself, so you will reduce pain to a minimum.

Helpful advice

The choice of one or another method of weaving dreadlocks is a personal matter for everyone. After all, you can even not braid anything, not comb or wash your hair, and over time your hair will curl into such “curls” that any dreadlock weaving masters will be jealous.

Dreadlocks– the natural state of hair, “not knowing” shampoo, scissors and combs. They are capable of changing a person's appearance beyond recognition. In most cases, dreadlocks are safe, the only exception being those that are braided using a lot of chemicals that significantly worsen the structure of the hair.

You will need

  • - shampoo;
  • - soap;
  • - water;
  • - a small comb or metal comb;
  • - elastic bands;
  • - hairpins and clips;
  • - wax;
  • - hook;
  • - hair dryer;
  • - wool gloves;
  • - kanekalon.

Instructions

A few hours before dreadlocks are safe, wash your hair with natural, additive-free shampoo or soap. The hair must be dry, that is, at the time of weaving dreadlocks, it must be completely dry and completely smooth.

Carefully divide your hair into equal segments (2x2 cm). It is best if these segments are arranged in a checkerboard pattern: in this case, the bald patches formed between the strands will not be noticeable. Secure each strand of hair at the roots using an elastic band.

There are several ways to weave safe dreadlocks. The most common are backcombing, twisting and rubbing with wool.

To make dreadlocks using the combing method, take a separated strand of hair, remove the elastic band from it and begin to comb your hair vigorously from tip to root. At this time, twist the combed strand with your other hand, that is, the whole point is to tangle the hair as much as possible. The density of the backcomb at the hair roots and ends should be the same.

Secure the finished dreadlock with an elastic band a centimeter from the tip. After this, apply a small amount of wax to the dreadlock and heat it with a hairdryer (the wax should be completely absorbed). The first dreadlock is ready (all other dreadlocks are made using the same principle).

The method of weaving dreadlocks - twisting - is suitable for curly hair. Separate thin strands, twist them (clockwise) and secure with an elastic band. Soak each twisted strand in wax and dry with a hairdryer (until the wax is completely absorbed).

To create dreadlocks using the third method, the wool rubbing method, put on woolen mittens and begin rubbing your head in a circular motion until the hair turns into a large tangle. Then divide this clump of hair into separate strands and roll each one in your palms for 15 minutes, gradually adding wax. Secure the ends of the dreadlocks with rubber bands, and crochet any loose hairs.

Dreadlocks using Kanekalon - artificial hair - are considered the safest. Strands of prepared artificial hair are fixed in two places with elastic bands. The middle part remains untouched, while the lower and upper parts are curled and combed.

The hair on the head is divided into a certain number of strands, each of which is braided. Dreadlocks artificial hair is folded in half and the middle unrolled part is braided to, securing them with hairpins and clips.

It’s not just an element of fashion, it’s a special worldview. One day the god Jah will descend to earth and pull all “his” by the dreadlocks into a bright future. But how can you become the happy owner of dreadlocks without ruining your hair? This is why today there are safe dreadlocks that are quite easy to make at home.

You will need

  • Kanekalon - 2-3 packs, depending on the desired length, thickness and number of dreadlocks
  • fine tooth comb
  • scissors
  • hair straightener
  • damp cloth
  • thin elastic bands

Instructions

Separate a small strand of kanekalon, bend it in half and tie the bend with an elastic band. We secure the strand to available objects (chair, table, bed...) so that it does not move.

We begin to comb one of the halves of the strand with a comb. To do this, we move the comb up and down along the curl so that our lock gradually turns into a homogeneous tangle. In order for the dreadlocks to turn out better and smoother, this step should be given special attention.

When our tangle is sufficiently tangled, we can begin to twist it. It is better to keep the dredine closer to the bottom, twisting it carefully so that it is uniform in thickness.

Next you need to wrap our dreadlocks with a damp cloth. Then we take a heated straightener and begin to carefully process the curl, stopping at each section for 2-3 seconds. When the dreadlock has straightened and secured, we repeat the entire procedure from step 2.

After the dreadlock is completely ready (2 halves), you can trim the protruding hairs with scissors.

note

When heat treating, you should be very careful and careful so as not to burn yourself or burn the hair.

Helpful advice

To ensure that the cloth always remains damp, it is very convenient to use a spray bottle.
- One finished de-dreadine is 2 halves, that is, 2 dreadlocks. Based on this, calculate the required number of dreadlocks for your head.

Dreadlocks (from the English Dread locks - terrible tangles), or simply, borrowed from the religious paraphernalia of the Jamaican Rastafarians, have become a fashionable hairstyle in our time. Dreadlocks today are worn on all continents by people of any gender, age and with a wide variety of social status. This hairstyle is popular both in youth subcultures and among real fashionistas.

You will need

  • Hair from 15 centimeters, comb, wax, hair dryer, Kanekalon.

Instructions

You can create dreadlocks in several different ways. The easiest way is suitable for Rastafarians, homeless people and free artists. You just need to not cut your hair or comb your hair. Sooner or later, hair that does not know how to comb will roll itself into long hair. These are dreadlocks. If you have curly hair, which you also don’t wash at all or only wash with soap, the process will go faster. If the hair is straight, the dreadlocks will look as sloppy as possible for several more years until they fall off.

You can help nature and roll up man-made tangles faster. There is a choice here. Jamaican Rastafarians, for example, to speed up the process of “dreadification”, tangle their hair into a braid, which is torn in half from tip to root. It hurts, and you can’t untie your hair back, but a true fan of rastaculture doesn’t care.

A more gentle method is to comb your hair in small strands from tip to root. In this case, the hair is damaged. The result can be improved and secured by lubricating the combed strands with special wax or regular beeswax and drying the hair with a hairdryer.

If you don’t have enough of your own hair, everything is done exactly as described in the previous step, but Kanekalon strands are combed along with your own hair. The result will become even more reliable if you seal such combined dreadlocks at the ends. Kanekalon is great for this.

It is believed that dreadlocks are not just a stylish hairstyle that allows you to stand out from the crowd, but an entire philosophy and way of life. Those wishing to join the “dreadlocks” subculture should contact a qualified craftsman; however, with the support of a patient friend, you can braid dreadlocks at home. However, you will have to spend a couple of days on this activity.

How are dreadlocks made?

There are many ways to create dreadlocks, and we will look at the most effective one. Its advantage is that the hair looks like dreadlocks from the first day.

You will need:

  • wax for dreadlocks;
  • small elastic bands and hair clips;
  • comb-comb with thick teeth.

The above steps are repeated for each strand - a total of 30 - 40 dreadlocks should be obtained. This technology is only applicable on hair longer than 8 cm.

How to care for dreadlocks?

The first month after creating an extraordinary hairstyle, you cannot wash your hair. To help get rid of itching, wipe the skin with it. An alternative is Chlorhexidine. You can't scratch your head!

After a month, the hair should be washed and corrected, otherwise the dreadlocks will become shaggy.

Subsequent care consists of washing hair with tar shampoo or soap. It is useful to rub burdock oil into the scalp with massage movements for 15 minutes. Experience shows that washing hair with dreadlocks is effective in a decoction of hibiscus tea (a pack of water in a basin) with the addition of cinnamon (1 spoon).

How to unravel dreadlocks?

Unraveling dreadlocks is very painful, and inevitably 30–50% of your hair is lost. The remaining hair will require intensive restoration with the help of masks and oils.

You need to start unraveling the dreadlock from the tip - a fork or crochet hook will help with this. If the tourniquet is very dense, you can wet it with hot water and continue “combing” it with a hook or fork. If you don’t have enough patience, all you have to do is cut off the dreadlocks: a new hairstyle in the form of a short “hedgehog” is an equally interesting experiment!

If previously only Africans, Indians and Rastafari made dreadlocks, now it is can afford absolutely everything.

And the stereotype that only people from informal movements wear such a hairstyle is hopelessly outdated.

Deservedly dreadlocks will be appreciated those who know a lot about comfort, who are constantly on the move, who don’t want to waste time on troubles with their hair, but at the same time don’t mind looking cool.

So, before purchasing everything you need, you should familiarize yourself with the techniques and decide which one is better. Let's start, again, with natural dreadlocks.

How are dreadlocks made and what are the techniques for braiding on living hair?

There are incredibly many different techniques for braiding natural dreadlocks, but not all of them are convenient and effective. So we will briefly talk about two the most reliable techniques.

Crochet weaving

This method is good because dreadlocks braid quickly, but they turn out dense and neat. Plus, you can braid the end of the dreadlock, which will be thin and only slightly shaggy.

The process itself sometimes turns out to be quite painful. Also, immediately after braiding, the dreadlocks stick out in different directions and pull strongly, but this goes away after a couple of days.

For this technique you You will need a regular crochet hook and the ability to handle it carefully, otherwise you will get punctured fingertips.

Hand weaving

This the method does not require any tools, except for straight arms, it is the most painless. With this weaving, dreadlocks are smooth and soft, and you have complete control over the shape and density of the dreadlock. But you need experience.

It’s unlikely that everything will work out as it should the first time, so It's better to consult a specialist. Also be prepared for calluses on your hands.

It is most reliable to weave with the first option, especially if you are a beginner. We have attached detailed instructions to it.

Step-by-step instruction

Before weaving
You definitely need to prepare your hair. The day before braiding, wash your hair with soap and do not use conditioner so that it gets tangled easily.

Also need mark the head. Make the segments as even as possible and secure each with an elastic band at the base so that hairs from different segments do not get tangled with each other, otherwise the dreadlocks may grow together later.

Segments must be placed strictly in a checkerboard pattern! Optimal number of segments somewhere around 25-50 pieces.

Now you can proceed directly to weaving:

  1. First you need turn a strand into a tangle. To do this, we divide it (tear it) into two halves, twist it a little, tear it again, twist it, tear it. And so on until a tangle forms at the root. It is important that it is strong. The soft tangle needs to be pulled to the root, dividing the strand in half.
  2. Further we continue to knock down the strand the same as in the first point, until it becomes one continuous tangle. The more you tighten the strand, the stronger and thinner the dreadlock will be.
  3. Now we you will need a hook. We pierce the tangle with it, take some protruding strand, wrap it several times around the future dreadlock and pull it out through it using a hook.
  4. In this way completely forming dreadlocks.
  5. Now we reach the tip. It can also be braided, or left fluffy.
  6. Finally a little correcting dreadlocks.

Weaving safe dreadlocks

Safe dreadlock weaving technician quite a lot too. For example, there is a technique when artificial material is simply wrapped around a braided strand of hair, that is, the strand itself appears to be inside the dreadlock. But only professionals weave this way.

De-dreadlocks should be worn for no more than four months, as there is a risk that the regrown roots will begin to get into tangles.

Materials that you will need:

  • First of all, these are the dreadlocks themselves. It is best to take Kanekalon. They are sold in specialized stores.
  • Hook to thread the strand through the dreadlock.
  • Medium needle and thread, matching the color to the dreadlocks.
  • Rubber bands to secure the markings.

Step-by-step technique for weaving de-dreads

Before weaving Carry out the same preparation as for natural dreadlocks. Let's get started:

  1. Take a ready-made dreadlock. You can simply braid it, or you can fold it in half and get two dreadlocks on one strand. By the way, this is where the name de-dreads came from (D.E. - double ended, that is, double-sided).
  2. Then pierce the base of the dreadlock with a hook or, if the dreadlock is double-sided, the place of the bend.
  3. Pull out the entire strand through the dreadlock and pull it to the root.
  4. Now dreadlocks need to be braided. Divide a strand of your hair into two parts and weave a regular braid, using the dread itself or half of it for double-sided as the third strand. We weave tightly, constantly pull the strands of your hair up to the base of the dreadlock so that there are no gaps in the weaving.
  5. When you finish braiding dreadlocks, take a needle and thread and sew the tip.
  6. For reliability, you need to completely flash the entire dreadlock, pay special attention to protruding strands. As a result, the dreadlock should be smooth.
  7. The double dreadlock has a soul mate not sewn or woven anywhere, but remains dangling in a free state.

Dreadlocks are washed About once every 10-12 days, about once every two months you need to do a deep cleaning.

Do not blow-dry artificial dreadlocks, since kanekalon is very sensitive to high temperature.
