Holidays of the Slavs

This folk wisdom was given by our ancestors

Slavism- this is the veneration of the Family, ancestors, and the creation of family ancestral life, according to ancient Slavic customs.
Traditions of the Russian people- this is the invaluable experience of countless generations of our ancestors. And no matter how many eras pass, no matter how many times they wander in the darkness of foreign traditions, Russian people always return to their native tradition.
Our calendar - or, more correctly, Kolyady Dar- served our ancestors for thousands of years, helping them cultivate the land and harvest on time. The year, divided into twelve parts, was depicted on ritual bowls, and each month had a special sign.
Annual wheel - Kolo Svarog- carried a special meaning, which consisted in the eternal rebirth and renewal of all living things. But the calendar is important not only for everyday life, it is always decorated with cheerful holidays.

Traditional Slavic holidays

Traditional Slavic holidays connected with nature and the events occurring in it, they contain and conceal a deep sacred essence and meaning. Almost all holidays among the Slavs coincide with the cycle of life of the Earth, and therefore have not only a spiritual meaning, but also another - familiarization with Nature, bringing into one’s life the feeling that the Earth is living matter. The rituals that our great ancestors once performed in ancient times are designed to ensure peaceful coexistence and harmony with nature.

Sun has long been especially revered by the Slavs as a symbol and source of life on earth, giving warmth and light to all living things. And this happens every year, constantly, in a continuous circle [circle], in the form of which the ancient Slavs represented our Universe.

Names of Slavic months years reflect those changes in nature that are most characteristic of each of the four seasons. Below is a list of the main holidays and customs of the Slavs.
Seasons symbolize birth [spring], growing up [summer], maturity [autumn], death [winter].

Kologod among the Slavs divided by four seasons [winter, spring, summer, autumn], in each of which great holidays are especially celebrated: 2 solstices [solstice] in winter and summer - the time when the Sun is reborn: the old Sun fades away, but its place is taken by a new one - the emerging young and 2 equinoxes [spring and autumn].

Calculation of the Slavs

Calendar reform of Peter I

It is no secret that the widespread use of the Russian calendar ceased by order of Peter I. The Tsar, raised by foreigners, introduced a new foreign calendar on the territory of Rus' and ordered to celebrate the advent of 1700 from the Nativity of Christ on the night of January 1st. While in Rus' it was the summer of 7208. The chronological innovation was a nod to the West by Peter I and the theft of five and a half thousand years of history from the Slavic-Aryan culture.

Japanese Culture Festival J-FEST

On July 15 and 16, the largest festival of Japanese culture, J-FEST, will be held on Arts Square in front of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Gorky Park.

J-FEST is a variation on the theme of the traditional Natsu Matsuri festivals, which are held throughout Japan from July to August: they decorate the streets with lanterns, sell souvenirs and gifts, prepare a special menu and wear traditional summer yukata kimonos.

Mass celebrations are accompanied by national bon-odori dances around a special podium, which everyone can join. In ancient times, traditional festivals were used to thank the gods for good health and prosperity.

The goal of the festival is to recreate the unique atmosphere of the summer holiday of the Land of the Rising Sun. Visitors will be able to take part in master classes in calligraphy and tea ceremony, ikebana and bonsai, dance and martial arts: aikido, judo, karate and ninjutsu, and watch performances by Japanese artists.

At the festival you will be able to play traditional games of Go and Shogi, try Japanese cuisine, get acquainted with the products of Japanese companies and buy original souvenirs, such as traditional Japanese balls.

The summer cinema and lecture hall of the Garage Museum will host screenings of Japanese films and lectures on Japanese culture, in particular on the art of kimono by the famous silk master Itchiku Kubota.

The festival will also feature Yusuke Ito, a two-time Guinness World Records master of the billbok, and Mao Asuka, a traditional Japanese dance teacher who will teach visitors the art of bon-odori. Special guests of the holiday are a group of Japanese drummers ASKA-GUMI, world famous for their spectacular shows.

Night of one-act ballets at VDNH

July 15 at the new venue “Green Theater of VDNKh. Stage on the Water" will host a Night of One-Act Ballets, during which the audience will be shown a production of "The Seasons", inspired by the works of Bach, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Pärt, and "The Rite of Spring" to the music of Igor Stravinsky.

The night of one-act ballets is a joint project of VDNKh and the Ballet Moscow theater at the new venue “Green Theater of VDNKh. Scene on the water." The audience will be presented with a program consisting of a cycle of one-act ballets.

Ballet “The Seasons”: composer Vladimir Martynov, choreography by Kirill Simonov (“Spring” and “Winter”), as well as Anastasia Kadruleva and Artem Ignatiev (“Summer” and “Autumn”). Inspired by the works of Bach, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Pärt.

Another one-act ballet presented this evening will be the legendary “The Rite of Spring” by Igor Stravinsky (in 2017 the world celebrates the 135th anniversary of the birth of the great composer). This ballet, staged by the famous French choreographer Regis Obadiah, won the national theater award “Golden Mask” and is the hallmark of Ballet Moscow.

On July 15, the Night Run will take place in Moscow. The start and finish town will be located next to the Southern Sports Core on the territory of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex.

The 10 km Night Run route will run along the Frunzenskaya and Prechistenskaya embankments. Participants in the race will have night views of artistically illuminated landmarks: the building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), the building of the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation, St. Andrew's and Crimean bridges, the buildings of the former Red October chocolate factory and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

On July 29, viewers will be able to see the film story “A Simple Story” (1960) with Nonna Mordyukova and Mikhail Ulyanov about the choice between feeling and duty. On August 5, there will be a screening of Sergei Gerasimov’s dramatic film “By the Lake” (1969) about the love of a scientist’s young daughter for an adult married man.

On August 12, the final show will take place as part of the “Path of the Heart” program. While the title of the film is kept secret, all that is known is that it will tell viewers about the secret of love.

From July 11 to October 31, a unique multimedia exhibition “Miracles of Russia” will be held in the building of the Historical Museum. Viewers will see about a hundred natural and architectural objects that were included in the final list, compiled based on the results of a popular vote.

Along with the well-known “pearls” - Lake Baikal, the palace and park ensemble in Peterhof, Mount Elbrus - the exhibition also presents unique places less known to the general public.

ъRussia is an extraordinary country, with an amazing history, culture and a vast territory containing countless unique natural and man-made monuments. However, sometimes the sights of exotic resorts or monuments of European architecture are known to us much better.

The exhibition “Wonders of Russia” is designed to correct this situation and introduce both Russians and foreign guests to the most impressive architectural and natural objects that everyone should see at least once in their life.

The project, aimed at identifying the most beautiful places in Russia, was initiated by the Izvestia newspaper in collaboration with the Mayak radio station and the Rossiya TV channel in 2007.

In 2008, as a result of a popular vote, the “7 Wonders of Russia” were chosen:

Weathering pillars Man-Pupu-ner in the Komi Republic

Elbrus peak in Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria

Lake Baikal in Buryatia

Valley of Geysers on the Kamchatka Peninsula

Mamayev Kurgan, Motherland monument

Monument of palace and park art "Peterhof", St. Petersburg

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

However, the list of wonderful places for which Russians voted was much larger and numbered about a hundred objects - both natural and architectural. For example, it included the mountain range of the Putorana Plateau in Siberia, the Caucasian dolmens, Lake Baskunchak, the Ruskeala marble canyon in Karelia, the Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka, the “Pole of Cold” in Yakutia, the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano, the Tobolsk Kremlin, Ivolgin Datsan in Buryatia, an ancient settlement Arkaim in the Chelyabinsk region and much more.

The multimedia exhibition “Wonders of Russia” will help guests take an unforgettable “tour” through the most interesting and sometimes secluded corners of Russia. Beautiful photographs, rare archival materials, animated images on huge screens and a painstakingly thought-out “route” will provide an immersive effect and create the impression of a real journey.

The exhibition “Wonders of Russia” is timed to coincide with the year of ecology in Russia, so the goal of the organizers was not only to show all the extraordinary natural resources of the country, but also to draw attention to the need to preserve and protect these places.
